1646 Newark Sixpence - Hird 269
Charles I (1625 - 49). Newark. (1645-1646). Sixpence,1646. Large crown dividing C R, VI (mark of value) below Rev. OBS : NEWARK 1646 in three lines. (S.3146; Hird 269)
A superb Newark 1646 Sixpence (s.3146; hird dies 269) however as you can see from the images the coin have been struck on silverware where the original design is still visible, which is very rare to see. Newark coinage was struck from silverware from within the town walls and hammered out and cut into their iconic and distinctive shapes to pay the soldiers defending the town from parliamentarians. It’s highly plausible that this piece was struck from something similar to the third image we have attached. This is an extraordinary piece and furthermore was from the Samuel Birchal collection (1761-1814) which was sold in 2021 via DNW. His collection was truly exceptional for a private collection made over 200 years ago, and unseen by all but a tiny number of scholars since, to come to today’s international coin market.
