This last issue Shilling from the besieged Royalist town of Pontefract is an extremely rare issue. Those at Pontefract under the command of Colonel Morrice declared the town for Charles II and the city's motto – Post mortem patris pro filio – a motto which also appears on this siege issue, refers to that support. On 24 March 1649, almost two months after Charles was beheaded and after a siege of almost nine months, Colonel Morrice and his garrison finally capitulated Ponetfract . This Shilling has been minted on a well proportioned large flan and is extremely characterful, despite the plug at 6 o'clock. Now slabbed PCGS VF detail plugged. This the former property of the renowned author JJ North whos book is still today an authority on coin classifications !
