1643 Charles I Oxford Mint Halfcrown - Ex Ansty Hoard !
Charles I (1625-1649), Oxford Mint (1642 - 46), Halfcrown, 1643, Briot's horseman, grassy ground below CAROLLVS error in legend, rev. Three Oxford plumes above declaration, date below, m.m. plume/- (S.2956: N2416: bull ox 604/D: PAS: DOR-180F98 = BM 2019 T966/142 this coin; Brooker -)
An extremely rare discovery from the Ansty Civil war hoard. The reverse declaration features the error C over G in RELIG. Prior to being found, only 2 other examples existed and coincidentally one was also from another hoard. The obverse also features a grammatical error where CAROLVS has been spelt with two Ls. One would assume its highly unusual to have a coin With both an obverse and reverse engraver's error! Like most Briots the horseman is rather weak in appearance however overall a VF with die striation marks clearly visible in the reverse fields.
Provenance,
Recovered from the Ansty (Dorset), Civil War Hoard, 19 October 2019
